Heal your Gastritis with Celery & Cabbage Juice, These Work!

Juices that Help Heal your Gastritis

When I first heard about the benefits of drinking pure celery juice I suspected it was just another trendy fad that celebrities raved about and when I tried it I would not notice one bit of difference. But I must say it’s probably been the one thing I’ve tried that has made the biggest difference to my Gastritis symptoms.

I decided to give it a go when I wanted to come off of PPI’s, I knew I had to do it slowly and gradually taper off over a few weeks or months (this depends on how long you have been on them).

I kept feeling nauseous mid-morning and I read that Celery juice was meant to really help. Apparently, it helps restore the hydrochloric acid in your stomach as well as flush out toxins, so thought I had nothing to lose by giving it a go.

So I started taking it every morning on an empty stomach, just straight celery juice with nothing else added (apart from a dash of water) and I was amazed at how much better my stomach felt.

I am not sure if it was a coincidence but I also felt so much better in myself, less sluggish and tired, and most importantly not nauseous. I also noticed my appetite came back a little, which is something that tends to disappear when I’m having a gastritis flare.

The Medical Medium

I found out about the supposed benefits of Celery Juice after seeing the Medical Medium – Anthony Williams talking about it on a show. There are lots of videos online where he talks about why people should try it. His Youtube Channel is here

  • 1 Muslin cloth
  • 1 Blender or smoothie maker
  • 1 Bowl

Ingredients

  • 1 pack Celery sticks (Organic if possible)
  • 1 tbsp Water

Instructions

Celery juice with Blender/Smoothie maker

  • Use a whole pack of celery sticks, (Organic if possible) give them a wash, and then chop into bitesize pieces.
  • Pop in the smoothie maker and blitz until smooth with no lumps. Add a little water if it doesnt blend easily.
  • Get a muslin cloth and lay it over a sieve, over a bowl.
  • Next, pour the juice into a sieve, then pick up the muslin cloth and squeeze all the juice out into the bowl.
  • It should make about 16oz of juice, I would start with a bit less than this though, while your stomach adjusts, maybe 10oz to start.

Celery juice with Juicer machine

  • Wash a pack of Celery sticks and pop into juicer
  • It should make about 16oz of juice, I would start with a bit less than this though, while your stomach adjusts, maybe 10oz to start.

Notes

It’s important not to mix with anything else and needs to be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Then wait 30 minutes before eating anything.

Top tip – If you are tight on time you can chop the Celery the night before, pop it into the blender cup so it’s ready to juice and put it in the fridge, (this saves so much time in the morning!) But it’s best to not actually make the juice the night before as it’s better if fresh.

This is definitely my go-to when my stomach is playing up, just a few days on having this makes a big difference. It might not work for everyone but it’s cheap and easy to try, so you have nothing to lose.

Don’t add anything to your Celery Juice!

I hear lots of people talk about adding other things to their Celery Juice, to maybe make it even healthier or to taste better, but it’s important to keep it plain and not add any extras for maximum benefits to your stomach.

Why do I feel Nauseous after Drinking Celery Juice?

It’s not unusual to feel nauseous after drinking Celery juice at first, especially as you need to have it on an empty stomach. Your body needs to adjust to it and this can take a few days. The first time I took it in the morning I did need to rush to the toilet quite quickly too as it does have a mild laxative effect. But after a few days of taking it I was having no unpleasant side effects.

If you have a juicer it’s easy but I, unfortunately, didn’t have a juicer but I did have a smoothie maker and so used this instead (these are fairly cheap, mine was only £19.99), and my family uses it all the time for making healthy smoothies too.

This is the one I use, which I love:- Nutribullet

Update – My juicing just got easier!

I just had a birthday and my family surprised me with a juicer. I was doing ok without one when making my daily celery juice with the blender, but I have wanted to try doing cabbage juice for a while and that seemed a lot more complicated without a juicer. I used to have an Aicock juicer and was looking to get another one but it was out of stock at the time.

So I ended up getting the Jocuu Slow Juicer Masticating Juicer and it’s one of Amazons bestsellers, I can see why it’s been fantastic and much easier than using the blender and sieve, although you still have just as much washing up, there’s no avoiding that!

It’s much quicker and although you have to wash up, it’s very easy to take apart and clean, it also comes with a little brush that’s useful. Can’t wait to try juicing some different fruit and vegetables now.

Cabbage juice for Gastritis

I have been keen to try cabbage juice for a while, it’s been used for years as a treatment for ulcers and studies have shown it works really well.

Apparently, if you have ulcers or gastritis you should try and have a glass before each meal, but as I would be using it as a preventative juice i.e my gastritis is under control at the moment.

It suggests a glass a day will be enough. Apparently, it has S-methyl methionine (also known as vitamin U) in it as well as lots of other good stuff, which all help to heal the mucous membranes in the stomach lining.

A study was done with patients with ulcers and the results were amazing, with patients taking 7.3 days to heal as opposed to the usual 42 days.

Should I drink Cabbage Juice on an empty stomach?

Yes! Both Celery and Cabbage juice should be taken on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. If you have any unwanted side effects just reduce the amount you drink for the first few days until your body gets used to it.

Trying Cabbage juice – week 1

My stomach had been a little unsettled the last few days, mainly as I had been eating things I probably shouldn’t have been, so it seemed like a good time to try it and see if it helped get things back on track.

After some research, I decided on giving red cabbage juice a try, although it seems any type is good.

It actually tasted really good; it has that cabbagey taste but it’s somehow not as strong and quite surprisingly sweet. The colour was amazing and almost looked unnatural it was so vibrant. I was quite excited to get all that goodness into my body.

Week one – I had the juice before my breakfast on an empty stomach (the same as I do with celery juice) and then waited half an hour before eating anything to give it a chance to do its work in my stomach.

I felt really good after drinking it even on the first day. I had no nausea which I had experienced the 2 days before having it.

Day 2 and 3 were similar and I found my bowel movements were also regular and normal which can be a bit of an issue for me.

For the rest of the week, I found things were very settled and my stomach was feeling good. So I haven’t noticed anything amazing but I have noticed little improvements and so I am keen to carry on with it for at least the next few weeks.

I will pop back on here and give an update, so watch this space……………

  1. Absolutely agree Daphne, it really helps me too. It seems to kickstart the digestive system and makes me feel so much better, definitely worth the effort.

  2. Hello Sam, unfortunately my chronic Gastritis is back again after 2 year remission. I tried pure celery juice today and got bad stomach pain. I suppose that this is due to its ability to increase stomach acid production but I’m not sure… I am confused because all I can tolerate is meat and eggs. Also I was able to stop the pain be drinking Bone Broth with coconut oil. It seems as if my body acts completely different from what is usually written on the internet. I have to avoid most carbohydrates as well as fibre. Grains are a no go. Do you have any idea what could cause this? The last two flare ups startet after taking larger doses of probiotic supplements due to gut issues. Thanks!

    1. Hi Peter, It’s so difficult isn’t it. What works for one person doesn’t mean it will work for another. I know that I have had issues after having probiotics in the past. It caused my whole digestive system to flare up too, I stopped taking them and left them for over a year, then I tried a different type and weirdly had no issues with them. I think sometimes the best thing you can do is just eat whatever your body can tolerate and give it time. The flare-ups do tend to go eventually if your diet is bland and your body will heal. The fact that you have been ok for 2 years shows your body is capable of healing. It’s so frustrating though I know!

    2. Meat is really not good for gastritis especially when you are having a flare. I have been following a strict diet from Dr. David Klein Self Healing of Colitis & Crohn’s. A plant based diet is good. Mixture of Cabbage and celery juice is good. Start with a small portion. Bone broth and the greasy stuff won’t help you it will cause more problem at the long run

      1. I’ve just had celery juice for the first time this morning so going to see how it goes. Would you recommend having cellery juice, wait thirty minutes and then have cabbage juice? I’ve woken up this morning and my stomach feels like it’s been burnt over night, so hoping this helps. Interestingly, the night before, I had potato, sweet potato, leek, garlic, cellery, kale and vegetable stock soup. That morning I woke for first time without feeling totally nauseous. Going to try this again tonight. Thank you for this blog 🙏🙏🙏

        1. I am also wondering if it’s better to drink celery juice first on an empty stomach then wait 15 minutes before drinking the cabbage juice or can they be consumed together. I have been drinking the celery juice in the morning and then the red cabbage juice before bed.

          1. I would suggest waiting a bit longer than 15 minutes, at least 30 minutes and if you can do longer that would be great.
How long have you been having the juices, have you noticed any improvement yet?

  3. I found myself here after a Google search wondering why my recent finding of drinking celery juice worked for me. I had no idea about cabbage juice and will give it a try. Thank you for a wealth of information for all of us suffering from gastritis..

    1. Hi Janette, Thanks for your kind words about the blog, it’s really appreciated. Glad the celery juice helped you, cabbage juice is great too and many people find it helps, so definitely worth a go. Let us know how you get on.

    1. Hi Hannah, I’m afraid I haven’t yet found one that was as good as a homemade one. The problem is you only get all the good enzymes straight after the celery has been juiced, so if it’s being bottled and sold days later, much of the goodness would be gone. It’s a bit of a pain doing your own, but I promise the more you do it the quicker it gets.

  4. I just started taking 16 oz of celery juice every morning on an empty stomach and 16 oz of red cabbage juice in the evening before bed. I have read amazing things on these two juices for gastritis. So I am very hopeful! Thank you for this Blog!!

  5. It has been 5 days since i started taking cabbage juice but my stomach is hurting, i have Gastritis I don’t know what’s the problem.
I need a help, Gastritis is killing me
